Abstract
This year, marks the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution in the People’s Republic of China. For 10 stormy years from 1966, the country underwent massive sociopolitical upheaval that saw many intellectuals and common people driven to suffering and even death, as well as cultural relics and artefacts being destroyed. In this talk, Prof Dikötter will talk about the birth of the Cultural Revolution, and how this political campaign shook the nation as well as how its effect rippled across the globe.
